How to Label AI-Generated Content on Shopify: Step-by-Step Guide
Last updated: April 7, 2026
EU AI Act Article 50 requires that AI-generated content be clearly labeled. If you used ChatGPT, Jasper, or any AI tool to write product descriptions, generate images, or create marketing copy, those items need a visible disclosure. Here is exactly how to add AI content labels to your Shopify store.
What counts as AI-generated content?
Under Article 50 of the EU AI Act, the following must be labeled when AI was used in their creation:
- Product descriptions written or assisted by AI (ChatGPT, Jasper, Shopify Magic, etc.)
- Product images generated by AI (Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion)
- Marketing copy created with AI assistance (email campaigns, ad copy, social posts)
- Blog content written by or with AI tools
- Customer-facing chatbot responses generated by AI
The key word is "assistance." Even if you edited the AI output, the original generation must be disclosed if AI played a meaningful role.
Step 1: Audit your content
Before adding labels, identify every piece of AI-generated content on your store. Check:
- Product descriptions — did you use AI to write any of them?
- Product images — are any AI-generated or AI-enhanced?
- Store pages (About, FAQ) — did AI help write them?
- Blog posts — were any AI-assisted?
- Chatbot — does your store have an AI chatbot?
Complyo automates this audit. One scan identifies every product and page where AI content labeling is required.
Step 2: Add labels to product descriptions
For each product with AI-generated descriptions, append a disclosure at the bottom of the description. Here are three compliant formats:
Option A: Simple disclosure
This product description was created with the assistance of AI technology.
Option B: Detailed disclosure
This description was generated using AI (ChatGPT) and reviewed by our team for accuracy. In compliance with the EU AI Act (Article 50), we disclose this for transparency.
Option C: Minimal disclosure
AI-assisted content
Option B is recommended because it specifies the tool used, mentions human review, and cites the regulation. This demonstrates good faith compliance.
How to add in Shopify Admin:
- Go to Products in your Shopify admin
- Click on the product
- Scroll to the Description field
- Add a horizontal line (---) at the bottom
- Paste your disclosure text below the line
- Save
Step 3: Add labels to AI-generated images
For AI-generated product images, add the disclosure in two places:
- Image alt text: Include "AI-generated image" in the alt text field
- Product description: Add a note like "Product images were generated using AI technology"
In Shopify Admin, click on the image in your product editor, then edit the "Alt text" field to include the AI disclosure.
Step 4: Add a store-wide AI disclosure page
Create a dedicated page that lists all AI systems your store uses. This satisfies the transparency requirements of Articles 13-14.
- Go to Online Store > Pages in Shopify admin
- Click Add page
- Title: "AI Disclosure" or "Artificial Intelligence Transparency"
- Content should include: which AI tools you use, what they do, how they affect the customer experience, and how to request human review
- Add this page to your footer navigation
Step 5: Update your privacy policy
Add a section to your privacy policy that addresses AI processing:
- Which AI systems process customer data
- What data is processed by AI
- Whether AI makes decisions that affect customers
- How customers can opt out or request human review
Step 6: Set up ongoing monitoring
New products added to your store may also use AI-generated content. Set up a process to label new content as it's added:
- Add AI labeling to your product creation checklist
- Use Complyo's weekly auto-scan to catch unlabeled content automatically
- Train your team to disclose AI use in all new content
Common mistakes to avoid
- Hiding the label in metadata only: The disclosure must be visible to customers, not just in HTML tags
- Using vague language: "Enhanced content" is not sufficient. Say "AI-generated" or "AI-assisted"
- Labeling only some products: If you used AI on 50 products, all 50 need labels, not just new ones
- Forgetting images: AI-generated images need labels too, not just text
